Notes on Floating Bridge Equipment January 1944. A document prepared by Allan Harry Beckett to explain how to install and operate the Whale floating bridging equipment that he had designed. The Whale floating roadways were the key element of the Mulberry Harbours enabling ships to be unloaded in deep water a mile and a half from the shore. These notes contain full details of every component of Beckett’s Whale bridge units as well as details of the equipment he designed to enable the floating roadways to be installed over the Normandy beaches while under enemy fire.
